How to Clean Tile Floors and Grout: Step-By-Step Guide
Published Date July 28, 2021
Tile and grout cleaning is important because it keeps floors looking great, but not every property owner knows how to clean tile floors and grout. Often, they will only wipe their tile floors and grout using a damp cloth, thinking that it’s enough to do the job — however, this isn’t true.
Don’t make the same mistake; make sure that your tile floors and grout remain clean by following these tile and grout cleaning tips:
Step 1: Prepare the Grout Area
When cleaning your tile floors and grout, always start by wiping down the area using a damp cloth. This will enable you to remove any visible dust and other types of grimes in the area.
If you notice any stains or build-up, take all the time you need to clean those from your tile floors. Depending on how often you clean your tiles and grout, preparing the area will take you about a few minutes or a couple of hours.
Step 2: Clean Up Loose Debris
Aside from using a damp cloth, you can also prepare the grout area by cleaning up loose debris using a sweep or vacuum. This trick can also keep your tiles from getting dull and retain their shine.
Step 3: Mix Cleaning Solution
One of the best ways to clean tile and grout is to use an effective cleaning solution. As mentioned, merely wiping your tile floors and grout with a damp cloth isn’t enough to do the job.
You can mix different cleaning solutions at home, depending on the kind of debris you want to remove from your tile floors and grout.
To deep clean ceramic tile and grout, mix two parts baking soda with one part water. Baking soda can effectively dirt and grease, making it very easy for you to achieve cleaner tile floors and grout.
If you want to clean discoloured or stained grout, replace water with vinegar and mix it with baking soda. When cleaning fragile or coarse tiles, mixing two parts baking soda with one part hydrogen peroxide can do wonders.
Combine the ingredients mentioned and transfer them to a spray bottle. Spritz a generous amount of the solution to the area you want to clean and leave it there for a few minutes before you start brushing.
Step 4: Choose the Right Mop
After leaving the cleaning solution for about five to ten minutes, clean the tiles and grout using the right floor mop. Ideally, you should use a chamois-type mop because these mops work well in cleaning tiles and grout. Refrain from using a sponge mop as this pushes dirty water into the grout lines, causing them to darken and making it harder for you to clean the surface.
Don’t forget to change the water frequently as you’re mopping your tiles and grout. Continually using dirty water with your mop will only result in a cloudy and unsanitary floor.
Step 5: Use a Grout Cleaning Solution
Grab an old toothbrush or a grout brush to apply a grout cleaning solution to your grout lines. If you’re going to clean your grout using a vinegar solution, be careful when applying a grout cleaning solution as this can stain your tiles when mixed with vinegar.
Step 6: Scrub and Seal Grout
Allow the grout cleaning solution to sit for a few minutes on the surface. After, scrub all the grout lines using a brush and rinse clean with water. Wait for about 24 hours for the grout to dry, and then apply a sealer to preserve your efforts.
If you want to scrub your tiles faster, opt to use an old electric toothbrush. This will make cleaning a breeze!
